Case Interviews

Case interviews in Japan: structure a business problem before you solve it

Use a hypothesis-led, interview-friendly method for consulting and business case interviews without forcing a generic framework onto every question.

What you can use right away

  • Confirm the objective and measure of success first.
  • Build a tailored issue tree, not a memorized acronym.
  • Say your hypothesis and update it when evidence changes.

Take one minute to make the problem answerable

Restate the client, objective, timeframe, geography, and success measure. Ask for the facts that materially change the analysis. Then give the interviewer a short structure and say where you will start.

A framework is useful only when it fits the problem. Revenue, cost, customer behavior, channel, and capability can be sensible branches; do not recite categories that do not change the decision.

Try this checklist

  • Practice an opening with objective, scope, and first hypothesis.
  • For each case, write a custom two- or three-branch issue tree.
  • State units before doing any calculation.

Finish with a recommendation that can be challenged

End with recommendation, evidence, risk, and next action. If information is missing, say what you would test rather than hiding uncertainty. The interviewer is looking for judgment under incomplete information, not omniscience.

After a case, record where your structure broke or your calculation slowed. InterviewTrail AI can turn those notes into a targeted next-practice list rather than a vague “do more cases” plan.
